Utaina! is a one day symposium to bring together educators and researchers interested in science education in the Māori language. It intends to create a friendly environment to discuss ideas and challenges related to delivering science topics in the Māori language, as well as hearing about the latest research on this kaupapa.
The name “Utaina!” is borrowed from a declaration by Sir Āpirana Ngata in Ngā Mōteatea (Part 1) , where he used it “as a clarion call to us to load on board what remains of our previous heritage, the language” (Ngata, 2004, xxii). In this context, it encourages the use of the Māori language in a space where it has been often missing.
Utaina! is supported by a Te Poutama Māori Advancing Research Collaborations grant.
