Further information

It’s election year in Aotearoa New Zealand. Political parties are manoeuvring to get voters’ attention with promises of policies that will make a difference to their lives. But what would it take to create a healthy nation that is equitable and sustainable?

This webinar examines which policy choices could best support a healthy, equitable and sustainable Aotearoa NZ. Experts in Māori health and equity, environmental and climate-related health, and income and welfare will outline evidence on where approaches fall short and which actions could improve long-term wellbeing.

Moderated by RNZ senior journalist Katie Kenny, our guest speakers will bring us 2-3 areas of policy change that could make a difference to the health and wellbeing of our communities. Their talks will be followed by a panelist discussion.

Professor Papaarangi Reid is a public health physician known for over 30 years of leadership demanding Crown accountability for health inequities. Her research spans analysing disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous citizens, through more than 80 publications. She is Tumuaki at the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

Professor Simon Hales is an environmental epidemiologist at the University of Otago. Current projects include assessing health aspects of vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, estimating the global burden of disease attributable to climate change, empirical modelling of communicable disease in relation to climate and also the health co-benefits of climate change mitigation.

Shamubeel Eaqub is an experienced economist who makes economics easy. He is a thought leader unafraid to take a contrarian view. He is also a media commentator, author and the chief economist at Simplicity.
