John had a joint appointment with the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, Dunedin School of Medicine and Oral Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago. He was instrumental in the introduction of hauora Māori in the health sciences undergraduate curricula.

John has published widely on numerous Kaupapa Māori health research projects including oral health, smoking, injury prevention and with some amazing Māori women on Māori women and childbirth. He was the Principal Investigator for the Aotearoa component of an International Collaborative Indigenous Health Research Partnership looking at the oral health of whānau and their mokopuna. This project was also conducted in Australia and Canada. The outstanding results of the Aotearoa component of this project will be published in the September 2021 issue of the New Zealand Dental Journal. He was part of the Wai 2575 Hauora Māori Claim to the Waitangi Tribunal appearing before the Tribunal on 16 October 2018. John has presented the mihiwhakatau at every University of Otago graduation ceremony for the past 25 years; he is secretary of the Otago University Rugby Football Club and secretary of the Otago Officer’s Club.

John is an internationally recognized Māori playwright and a number of his plays have been presented to great acclaim at International Arts Festivals in Edinburgh, Australia and throughout New Zealand.
